Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina Josip Merdžo participates in the work of the UN conference on industrial property, sustainability and the future of the planet

Lisbon, May 30, 2023 - Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Josip Merdžo, is participating in the work of the conference dedicated to achieving the sustainable development goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030, entitled "Thinking about industrial property, sustainability and the future of the planet", which is being held in Lisbon on Monday, May 29 and Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

Opening speeches were given by senior officials of the United Nations and host Portugal, as well as Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Andrea Di Carlo, Deputy Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office (EPO).

Participants of the conference in several panels discuss challenges for achieving the goals of sustainable development until 2030 from the United Nations (UN) Agenda because, as the organizers pointed out, the future of our planet will be seriously threatened if there is no definite commitment to innovation and setting new standards of equality, inclusion and sustainability.

Industrial Property constitutes a key element in the path established by the sustainable development goals. It incentivizes innovation and enables innovators to protect their creativity, their inventions and their investments, leading to more innovative solutions for the benefit of our planet.

The organizers particularly emphasized the need for urgent mitigation of climate change and the development of new green and beneficial technologies, which makes this conference an event of key importance as it allows participants - from the government, private sector, academia and others - to share, debate and commit to the crucial role that industrial property plays in reviving and achieving the goals of sustainable development.

In September 2015, Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with 192 member states of the United Nations, committed to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, consisting of 17 goals and 169 sub-goals, which strive to create a better and sustainable future for the entire world.
