Mostar: Seminar on regulating intellectual property rights at academic institutions held

Mostar, April 23, 2018 - Seminar titled "WIPO - Practical Guide to the Regulation of Intellectual Property Rights at Academic Institutions" was held in the amphitheatre at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Mostar on Friday, April 20, 2018.
Seminar was devoted to defining and implementing intellectual property policies for universities and scientific institutions.
Welcoming addresses were given by Josip Merdžo, Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Prof. Dr. Zoran Tomić, Rector of the University of Mostar and Olga Spasić, Advisor in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Department for Transition and Developed Countries (TDC), who also presented WIPO's Practical Guide to the Regulation of Intellectual Property Rights at Academic Institutions.
Senior Associate for International Patents at the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragana Marić Mešić spoke on national rules and regulations as a framework for institutional intellectual property policies at universities and research institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Saša Lazović, Assistant Minister for Technology Development, Technology Transfer and Innovation System in the Government of Serbia spoke about the use of intellectual property policies, i.e. lessons learned, at universities and research institutions in the Republic of Serbia.
Bernard Denis, knowledge transfer expert at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), presented the necessary preconditions for efficient intellectual property rights management at universities and research institutions, as well as CERN's specific experience in this domain.
During the seminar, it was also discussed how to empower academic institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina to use intellectual property for a stronger impact on society and dynamic regional and international cooperation, whereas Bernard Denis and Dr. Saša Lazović spoke on the importance of effective creation and management of intellectual property in academic institutions (experience of CERN and Institute of Physics from Belgrade).
Development of intellectual property policy through Ten Questions Method was presented. "WIPO's support for intellectual property policy development at universities and research institutions - we can work together!" was also one of the topics of the seminar.
Seminar was completed by discussing nominations of focal points at universities and research institutions for further collaboration with WIPO on institutional intellectual property policies and the potential creation of the IP academic network in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Organizers of the seminar were the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the University of Mostar, and the sponsor was the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
